VantagePoint IX: Janet Biggs

Janet Biggs: Going to Extremes

5 November 2010 - 31 July 2011

Mint Museum Uptown - 4th Floor Video Gallery

Janet Biggs has been creating and exhibiting videos and video installations for nearly 20 years, as she examines the themes of speed, precision, personal discipline, gender roles, spectatorship and calculated risk. Within her videos Biggs captures the athleticism of performance with exquisite imagery juxtaposed with danger. At times the performers/adventurers put themselves in peril—brushing with death—in pursuit of sublimity.  Janet Biggs: Going to Extremes will present 4 single channel videos, which will be projected within the Museum’s new media gallery. Airs Above the Ground (2007), now in the Museum’s collection, Vanishing Point (2009) and Fade to White (2010), which was filmed while the artist was in the Arctic on a fellowship will be screened. Her latest effort, focused on NASCAR racing brings Biggs into new territory—auto racing’s wild popularity and position within consumer culture creates both drama and heroism. Rather than focusing exclusively on the drivers, Biggs presents the speed, precision and agility of the pit crews and reveals their extreme grace under pressure. This video, Duet (2010), will be screened for the first time at The Mint Museum. Commissioned from the artist, it will remain in the Museum’s permanent collection. - Carla Hanzal, Curator of Contemporary Art

VantagePoint is an ongoing contemporary art series featuring artwork that explores recent, significant developments and approaches.  Janet Biggs is the first video artist in the VantagePoint series.  A brief history of video art can be found here.
