Finding the 21st Century Itzamná: Julio Gonzalez and Maya Tradition is the first in a series of "interentions;" new work interspersed amongst existing installations to reinvigorate the permanent collections on view and engage the work on view aesthetically, historically, and critically. This intervention will pair the work of Julio Gonzalez with art and library material from the Mint’s Art of the Ancient Americas holdings. Gonzalez used this collection specifically when researching and planning for his own work. Gonzalez’s work also embodies the tenant that the Maya traditions in which he works are vital, active practices that continue throughout Central America, revising common misconceptions that this culture is extinct and the work and practices are relegated to the “ancient” category only.
