The arts of Africa come from fifty-two nations, diverse ecosystems, varied political systems ranging from great kingdoms and city-states to small chieftaincies and nomadic bands of hunters, many social settings from initiations to the shrines of deities and the regalia of leaders, and dozens of value systems and religious beliefs. Thus, there are many different Africas, and consequently, great diversity in the arts and their histories. Arts of Africa features forms dating from 27,000 BCE to present day, with countless interactions among native Africans themselves over time; with Muslims, beginning around 1000 BCE; and with Europeans, beginning in the late 15th century. This exhibition concentrates on key forms in African art such as masks, ceramics, and utilitarian objects, and themes in African art including symbols of power, religion, and mother and child. Arts of Africa is organized by The Mint Museum in collaboration with guest curator Herbert Cole and includes many objects from the Mint Museum's permanent collection that are on view for the first time, as well as generous loans from private collections.
