Art Under Construction

March 2 - June 22, 2009

ImaginOn

One of the centerpieces of the new museum in Center City Charlotte will be a 1,900-square-foot Family Gallery, designed as a fun place for families to feel comfortable with art as they explore activities together. Families with young children represent an increasing segment of the Charlotte region's demographics, and this special family space will help to make the new museum a destination for area families with children age two to ten. The Family Gallery will provide an introduction to the collections of American art, Contemporary art, and international Craft and Design through creative, collaborative play in a hands-on setting. The aim is to create an intuitive space where the visitors drive the expereince.

With grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Mint is conducting a year of research, visitor studies, prototype development, family testing and formal assessments. ImaginOn is one of the most popular family destinations and is collaborating with the Mint to host this exhibit test. Prototypes and activities will include a Bearden Collage House, My Mint Museum sculptures, Ida's Shapes and Colors, Get in the Picture, and a weaving activity and talk-back section.
