Lay of the Land Introduction

Lay of the Land

Lay of the Land, is defined as the general state or condition of affairs under consideration; the facts of a situation. Landscape art is defined as: natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view – with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. While an artistic landscape may be the first thing you think of, landscape can also be interpreted to mean the environment in which you find yourself functioning, be it business, cultural, social or political.  In this tour, we’ll broaden those definitions as we consider the work of various artists.

For the Mint:

Can we expand our understanding of landscape in terms of craft?  We’ll examine 3 works, created by different artists of different materials by different processes to find where we can make connections.

For the other museums to interpret as they see fit.
