The Exhibition

Organized by the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art, State of the Art presents a refreshing and unique approach to surveying America’s contemporary art world. Instead of focusing on artists working in a handful of urban areas who are represented by major commercial galleries, Crystal Bridges Museum of Art’s former President Don Bacigalupe and Curator Chad Aligood traveled across the country visiting hundreds of artist's studios in each state. State of the Art features approximately 75 works of art drawn from every region of the United States. It includes media ranging from paintings and drawings to sculpture, photography, video, and installations. It examines the ways that today’s artists are informed by the past and inspired by the present, innovating with materials old and new to create work that is thought-provoking, skillfully crafted, and certain to engage all of the museum’s viewers. The exhibition seeks to de-mystify contemporary art, presenting it in an engaging, informative manner and emphasizing its artists’ relevance to modern life and their deep connections to their communities and the issues of the day. This fresh, democratic take on surveying the world of contemporary art will be a highlight of The Mint Museum’s 80th anniversary year. State of the Art is presented with the generous support of PNC Financial Services with additional support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Young Affiliates of the Mint.
