An illustration is a picture linked to a text. The best illustrations not only pictorialize the text, they capture its spirit. The selections of illustrated books from the Mint Museum Library exhibited are some examples of the best illustrations; created by artists whose fame comes from their work in the fine arts. Some of the artists represented worked regularly as illustrators; others rarely.

All the artists brought their  distinctive styles, attitudes, and mastery of techniques to serve a purpose: to enhance the written word, to provide the art in the book.
